The new king was Kamehameha II’s nephew, Alexander Liholiho. The people thought kindly of him from the start. He was the grandson of Kamehameha the Great through his mother, Kīna‘u. His father was Kekūanāo‘a, the governor of O‘ahu. Not only was he tall and handsome but he also had pleasing manners and was well educated. He was known to have a quick temper, but he always appeared to be friendly. Everyone thought that he gave promise of being a good king.
